Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students that choose to come to Uplift make a commitment from day one to complete rigorous work and exceed expectations every single day they are on campus. They continually work hard to figure out their path in life, and are focused on finding who they are and what they stand for in the process.
I have always been impressed with students within the charter system and Uplift is no different.
They have big hearts, open minds, and a great skill set that they can take with them when they graduate from our campus. They give their best every day and deserve to have the best in their classroom which is something I am hoping to give them through this amazing platform.
My Project
Being able to foster creative outlets and personal projects throughout the year allows me to create a safe and open classroom for my students. By providing these much needed supplies to replace ones that have been worn out, thrown out, or lost in transition, you are helping to create an attentive and reflective space.
Markers and clipboards might seem like a very small request when schools need so much, but in my classroom we use them weekly if not daily and they make a world of difference.
Our district focuses on global concepts, interdisciplinary studies, and real world knowledge for their learning targets. To start off, we are teaching The Hate U Give and will be keeping interactive journal that allows them to write, draw, reformat the novel, close read, and overall solidly engage in the text. For our second text, The Color of Water, we will be committed to research projects that involve posterboards students will spend weeks on. Here is where the colored paper, markers, scissors, glue, and other materials will come in to play day after day.
Instead of focusing on quizzes and exams every quarter, we spend quite a bit of time actively creating unique projects that thoroughly explain the anchor text we are reading and its connection to the world. With your support, I can make sure my students are able to have the materials they need to have an innovative and imaginative year!
