Help me give my students a creative working environment that encourages movement & flexibility within the classroom, with pub tables & bar stools to allow students flexible seating options that will take up less space.
I teach 6th grade at a small, suburban school in IN. This job was not in my plans, but the timing was perfect. After all, it’s the middle school I grew up in and the turnover rate is low, so it was unlikely I’d ever get in. Fast forward- the school year had started and the current teacher found she had to move, I quickly jumped on the opportunity. This meant my first week was each student’s 10th week. Not only was I learning new curriculum, a new building layout and 75 new faces, I was attempting to adopt the previous teacher’s procedures and blend with mine to be the least amount of transition. The last twelve weeks have been amazing as I’ve gotten to know these 11 & 12 year old personalities. Unfortunately, they haven’t been able to experience my personality in teaching. The budget (both school & my own) doesn’t allow for me to create a classroom environment with flexible seating, interactive lessons and more in-depth small group activities. With limited funding, I find myself purchasing the essentials like pencils, colored paper, etc. I’d love to have a functional, engaging classroom where students want to learn daily!
My Project
Like all so many teachers, I am constantly purchasing items for my classroom from my own budget because I want to give my students the absolute best. The tables and chairs will help consolidate space in the classroom and allow for more movement.
I cannot expect my students to give me more than mediocre work when I am only giving them a mediocre environment.
An additional bookcase will enable me to display books instead of keeping them in crates and the tables will eliminate using my desk as a workspace. My goal is to help students find their love for reading and writing. Giving them the classroom environment and organization to do that in is so important.
