Help me give my students a play-doh learning center filled with educational hands-on tools that can be used to foster creativity, literacy and math skills.
As a teacher in a low-income school district, I see that my students are faced with many challenges both in and out of the classroom. We spend a big part of the day together, and one of my goals is to always provide them with authentic, meaningful experiences on a daily basis.
They are very eager to learn and explore new things and especially loves hands -on activities.
Many of my students are being raised in single-parent households and receive a free lunch based on their socioeconomic. These things may prevent them from acquiring the life experiences many of us see as "typical". From the minute they walk into my classroom my job is to not only teach them but to make their day a memorable one. I want them to leave my class on a daily basis thinking learning is fun!
My Project
My students are in need of a Play-Doh learning center filled with educational hands on tools that can be used to foster creativity, literacy and math skills. My students can use Play-Doh to create a variety of things such as forming letters, numbers, shapes, and creating animal shapes and so much more. I have students who has challenges holding their crayon or pencil correctly and have difficulties cutting with a proper scissor grasp.
Allowing students to explore with Play-Doh can help strengthen and improve fine and bilateral motor skills.
The muscle we use to hold a pencil are the same muscles used when playing with Play-Doh. Young children need to build their fine motor strength and control and time exploring Play-Doh will help give those small hands a good workout. Through squishing, pushing, pulling, twisting and cutting this would help my students gain strength in their hands while enjoying an important multi sensory activity. Play-Doh would also allow my students to be creative, use their imaginations and talk about their creations, which would help them build their oral language skills. Play-Doh would be a huge asset to my classroom.
