My students come from wonderful families that work several jobs to provide shelter, food, and safety. The kids come to school every day aware that statistics prove the odds are against them, but knowing that their teachers and school community will do anything to give them a fighting chance to succeed. They are loving, hard-working, determined, creative, and enthusiastic. They have the biggest hearts, most curious minds, and abilities that are parallel to none. They deserve the entire world and then some!
My Project
Common Core is wonderful, but kids also need designated time for creative, interactive, and carefree play with their peers. Many of my students live in neighborhoods that don't provide a safe environment for them to hang out outside and play after the school day is done. In school, there are so many curricular obligations and lessons to be taught, that the kids often spend their entire day engaging in difficult educational lessons and rarely get to have fun free play with their friends in a safe and controlled environment.
Children learn and grow immensely through the act of play, and I want to do my part to ensure that they're given those opportunities safely.
Normally, our students are only given game play time on rainy day lunch and indoor recess, but I would like to incorporate peer game play into our weekly routine to expose kids to game rules, fair play, peer interaction, cooperative learning, problem solving, and sportsmanship.
