Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Hello donors! Thank you! Over the years you have been truly invaluable to the early education program I run in my classroom. I am so grateful for all you have done.
I always have many talented children in my classes, and I am always looking to expand the educational programs I deliver.
If we give children challenging things to do, learning comes naturally. We live in a world where our youth are simply not provided with enough quality resources to shine. Approximately sixty percent of the students at our school are African-American, about thirty percent are Latino, and the remaining ten percent are Pakistani, Ethiopian, Anglo-American, Asian, and others. Many students are of mixed heritage. The vast majority of our students qualify for free breakfast and lunch.
Give the gift of an excellent early education - all kids ought to have the same access to materials that our more privileged kids have.
My Project
The materials selected for this project are excellent for exploring math and science concepts taught in Kindergarten. And kids have fun at the same time. Problems, they say, are opportunities. The materials requested here teach students to think critically and make informed choices. Blocks form an important part of elementary curriculum. Many skills in science, math, and engineering are learned through building with blocks - students learn about stability, weight, balance, and gravity; they learn to think creatively about design and think about why some structures stand strong and why others collapse. Tegu Magnetic blocks are used to develop problem solving abilities, concepts of balance and scale, pattern recognition, fine motor skills, and to inspire students to engage in imaginative play and story-telling. I have a small set, thanks to donors through Donors Choose, and my students have made excellent use of them in conjunction with other creative building materials.
It is my goal to develop problem-solving strategies in the minds of my students so that they will be able to attack math without fear, but with relish, a mental condition that is obviously beneficial in areas of life outside of mathematics.
These materials will form an important part of the meaningful math, science and character curriculum that I strive to deliver. Your donation will make a real difference.
