My students need dance and music materials including scarves, bean bags, a parachute, percussion instruments, and music CDs for our Creative Movement classes that reflect our diversity and many cultures!
I am a Kindergarten teacher at a Title 1 public elementary school in Brooklyn's East New York where all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our students are a diverse group coming from countries all around the world, particularly from Bangladesh and Central America. Our families are all different and many children are living in shelters. With that comes a variety of learning and emotional needs.
I have found that many children can express themselves through the power of dance and movement.
With creative movement classes, I could reach many children who want to shine but haven't had the opportunity to do so. Since our students come from many different cultures and I am tailoring our music and dance offering to reflect the diversity of our student populations.
My Project
Creative Movement is a wonderful way to give students a voice through music and dance. When my children are given the freedom to express themselves through movement and rhythm, they blossom in front of my eyes. Everyone loves to move their bodies to the rhythm and beat of music - they just need a venue with supplies and materials to have fun with dance.
I'm requesting a variety of dance materials and musical percussion instruments including a Multicultural CD library and music CDs, a parachute, wrist bells, scarves, bean bags, rhythm sticks, and a Multicultural Instrument set.
These materials will be used in my new Creative Movement classes. Children will be able to hear the different music of their cultures and play instruments as they dance. These activities also fall under the umbrella of mandated physical education daily mandates.
