My Students

My students are energetic and creative. They love coming to music class twice a week. We're a Title I school with many musical opportunities. We have an after-school choir, an after-school world music drumming ensemble, band, and orchestra. Students have opportunities to perform for families and the community at least once a year.

Music gives my students a creative outlet during their day.

They are often in the driver's seat of their class. The students decide where to take a lesson and how to improve their musicianship as individuals or as a class. They have opportunities to try new things in a supportive atmosphere and can refine their musicianship in areas they feel they are strong.

My Project

Kindergarten through second-grade students need to move! Research shows that encouraging free movement can give children space to develop self-awareness, learn non-verbal ways of communicating and to get to know themselves and their bodies. Children learn their range of motion, balance, muscle strength, coordination, and endurance.

Creative movement provides children with opportunities for non-competitive, success-oriented, and creative experiences.

A stretchy band, ribbon wands, and a resource book full of ideas will help me teach my students how to use their bodies artfully while helping them build confidence and self-esteem. I want to give them a solid foundation in movement that will help them now and throughout the rest of their lives.
