My students need a STEM bundle, power tiles, and building bricks to explore enriching activities that will allow them to be successful thinkers and problem solvers.
I teach a group of energetic 5th graders who enter the classroom each morning with smiles on their faces. They may not have what they need on a daily basis, but they are eager to learn. Our school district is wonderful, but limited on funding resources.
My students, who are eager to learn about STEM, attend a public Title 1 school in a district with over 65% low income families that consists of single parents, military families, and those who are homeless.
My students are active individuals and will greatly benefit from hands on experiments and projects in the classroom. These students may never have the opportunity to explore and create outside the classroom. Therefore, they anxiously wait for the opportunity to explore how math and science work together to produce positive outcomes.
My Project
My 5th graders want to explore learning outside the textbook. Having a STEM Bundle will give them the opportunity to construct an earthquake-safe structure, design a robotic hand that can pick up a ball, and engineer a filter that purifies water. My students will work as a team in cooperative learning groups where they must think like real scientists in order to plan, build, and test their designs. I will supervise as they construct, but the main focus will be to place responsibilities on the students so they develop higher thinking skills in math and science.
Constructing their own projects will allow my students the opportunity to develop and master 21st Century critical thinking and problem solving skills along with many others.
The Power Tiles Circuit Kit and Building Brick STEM Challenge Kit will give my students the opportunity to be introduced to electronics and robotics. The students will use the power tiles to design and build night lights or beeping alarms to aid in their understanding of circuits. They will use the building bricks to complete hands on challenges through construction. These constructed pieces will enhance the students' understanding of physical science and engineering.
