Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

Our school has a student population of nearly 700 and we are expecting that number to increase by 200 for the next school year. The student population includes students of all ethnic backgrounds; providing a multitude of cultural diversity. All of our scholars are considered to be economically disadvantaged. The majority of students are from low-income families and are students who qualify for free or reduced lunch. We teach and inspire African American adolescents (46%), Latino and Latin American adolescents (52%), and 4% other nationalities.

What I love about my students is that they are energetic, enthusiastic, and colorful; to say the least.

Many of our scholars that come through our doors each day, come with many outside stressors. Even yet, they come to classes willing to work and put in their best efforts. While we have a large population of students with learning disabilities and language barriers, these students take on academic challenges and rigor just like their non-disabled and native English-speaking peers. Most of our students just need an outlet, a few words of encouragement, a boost in confidence, a shoulder to lean on, and a consistent adult who respects them, yet holds them accountable.

My Project

My Entrepreneurship class teaches students to think outside of the box and come up with innovative ideas that can lead them to become young entrepreneurs. Students create prototypes of their ideas to present to investors.

With a vinyl cutter, students can start a graphic design business instantly and a 3-D printer will give students the ability to increase their creativity by creating images and products they can actually see and work with.

They will have the ability to develop prototypes and products using a more imaginative approach. The class is a hands-on, project-based class.
