This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I am currently teaching Second Grade . My students are a part of the most diverse elementary school in my county. At my elementary school 75.8% of the students receive free or reduced lunch and 65.4% of the students are identified as African American or Hispanic. The school is located in a central location, but is predominately made up of low socioeconomic families. I am inherently focused on arming my many minority males with the tools they need to be successful and contributing members of the communities around them.
My students work tirelessly to prevent themselves from ending up being apart of the 60% of failing minority males that will eventually become occupants in the prisons across our nation.
They have excellent work ethic and drive, but we lack the resources protect them from being targeted based on their race and their socioeconomic backgrounds. My minority students overwhelmingly underachieve academically compared to their affluent peers. These are children that could close the achievement gap with the right resources.
My Project
These items will allow my my students to learn in an environment that fosters creativity and individuality. I want to create a classroom atmosphere that meets students where they are and takes them where they want to be!
The Breton Stripe Area Rug and stack stools will allow me to have small group setting with my daily rotations.
By adding flexible seating I can move away from the traditional setting and into more individualized teaching practices. My students deserve a setting that allows them to move and engage in their learning process. I am looking forward to having a classroom that promotes learning in a variety of ways!
