Creative Educator Looking for Ways to Engage Digital Learners
Help me give my students Lenovo Chromebooks to access greater depths of research material, as well as alternative ways for students to collaborate and present materials to the rest of the class.
My students are incredibly inquisitive, out of the box thinkers. The majority of them are identified gifted in one or more areas. Most of them have been in class together for 4-5 years already, which builds a type of familial community. We don't have busses, so our families get to see each other almost daily. Gifted students can feel out of place in a traditional classroom where their bigger than life ideas and emotions can seem out of place or odd. We are working to create an environment that fosters this love of discovery, imagination and innovation through project based learning.
My Project
Many students are used to being on technology devices outside of school hours. Students can feel a disconnect when they feel they are beyond traditional ways of learning in a classroom that is unable to provide 1:1 technology resources. This can impact the way students interact with materials available in the classroom.
Chromebooks provide my students opportunities to solve authentic, targeted learning challenges that are relatable and foster genuine curiosity, confidence and collaboration between students.
In the digital age, students need to not only be able to find information, but also to critically think about the information and effectively express their ideas. Students will dive deeper into learning when they have many options on how to find and present this information - including PowerPoints, Google Slides, digital drawings, etc.
The chromebooks will be used to maximize learning through matching style of acquiring and demonstrating learning through additional tools. Having more chromebooks in our classroom will allow me to reach more students at one time, and utilizing our time to its maximum. I can use online curricula and games to target specific standards during independent work, I can utilize apps that allow students to use voice to text and allow more time to be spent on editing tasks, I can also create highly engaging activities such as webquests, escape rooms, and digital projects to increase motivation.
