This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine walking into a classroom as a middle school student and not have a chair to sit in? Adolescence is difficult enough as it is. Sitting on the floor while other students are in chairs, knowing that there are not enough to go around, can be frustrating.
My students are enthusiastic, creative, and passionate Drama students.
They love the creative outlet that Drama class provides. Many times they are performing in front of an audience for the very first time. They are challenged with burdens beyond what any child should have to face. 91% are on free and reduced price lunch, and several are struggling with special needs. My students come to school ready to learn and they embrace their education in spite of their difficult backgrounds.
My Project
With these collapsible chairs that are lightweight, my students will be able to sit (in chairs!) as audience members in our classroom. When they perform for the school, we will be able to easily transport the chairs to the stage in the cafeteria. I'm sure the audience will be grateful to have a place to sit that is not a cafeteria table.
Theatre makes a great impact on my student's daily lives.
They need a comfortable place to sit that is not on the hard laminate floor of a portable. They will be able to arrange the seats into different configurations and learn how an audience can impact a performance. How much happier would you be if you came to class and had a chair to sit in where there was not enough to go around before?
