Hi, I am a STEAM Coordinator in a small suburban town. I teach students from kindergarten to grade 6. Students with special needs are integrated into the classrooms in a co-taught model.
Students of all abilities and learning styles benefit from the types of activities available to them in my classroom.
My classroom, known as the Makerspace, provides hands-on learning opportunities to my students. All students from the youngest to the oldest love using tools and technologies when designing and creating curriculum based projects.
My goal is to open the world to my students by providing them with innovative STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Math) experiences. When they move onto middle and high school they will know what these fields entail and will be able to customize their own learning to enhance their specific interests.
My Project
Students learn best by doing and when they are invested in a project. Many students families, as well as our school, have seasonal gardens. During this project, my fifth grade students will conduct experiments to observe the behavior of earthworms, redworms, and isopods and explore the role they play in decomposition. They will use this knowledge and that gained during their study of ecosystems to design a working compost bin.
After completing a compost bin plan, students will use Tinkercad to create a 3D representation of their bin for 3D printing.
Students in each of the fifth grade classrooms will vote on the class's best 3D compost bin design. That design will be 3D printed and tested using the live animals and proper organic matter researched by the students.
In the spring, students will use their knowledge of compost bins to ensure the proper materials are placed into our school garden compost bins.
