Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a STEAM and Title I elementary school in the heart of Silicon Valley. Nearly 75% of our students receive free or reduced-price breakfast and lunch each day. Most are English Language Learners from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds. Still, my students thrive in a rigorous learning environment, and they work extremely hard every day! They LOVE developing their science, technology, engineering, arts, and math in our interdisciplinary STEAM projects.
While our school is nestled in the heart of Silicon Valley, many of our students are not reflected in the faces of the tech industry.
I would like to change that and give my students every opportunity to succeed. I want them to have the same opportunities as other students in the area so that they can become problem-solvers in our 21st century.
My Project
This past summer I attended a week-long professional development hosted by Infosys Pathfinders Summer Institute to deepen my understanding of coding, engineering paper circuits, and how to integrate it into STEM/STEAM. During this training, I used the Love to Code Volume 1 book to follow the coding and paper engineering lessons. The lessons start from engineering simple paper circuits and lighting up an LED sticker, to designing more complex paper circuits by dimming/flashing the LED stickers and adding pressure switches. It was a great experience that I now want to pass on to my students!
I have started a few of these lessons with my students already; however, I do not have the actual books for each of my students!
So far I've had to download and copy everything for my students; this is time consuming, especially when many teachers are running to the copy machine at the same time(and the copier is not working). Your kind donations will provide these coding books, LEDs, and a great amount of copper tape to engineer many paper circuits.
I cannot express my appreciation for all your donations and to Infosys for matching them! Thank you so much for helping my young scholars love coding and engineering!
