Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a culturally diverse Title I school where 95% of the students are socioeconomically disadvantaged. Many of them have struggled academically. Most are English Language Learners who are learning to speak English alongside their academic learning. Even getting to school can be a challenge with early pickups and long bus rides required to get to school on time. My students work hard every day to overcome the challenges that they face. This is especially true since the Sonoma Fires ripped through our community in October. While none of my students lost their homes all of them were evacuated, some for several weeks as the fires ravaged Santa Rosa.
Since returning from the three-week school closure due to the fires my students have re-engaged with school and are working hard to strengthen our classroom community and make up for the learning we missed during the closure.
In spite of the extreme challenges we faced this year my students come to school actively excited every day; they love to learn and explore.
We are excited about finishing our year of learning together!
My Project
In parts 1-3 of this project, I requested new computers so my students can continue to create awesome projects using technology.
We need a cart to safely and securely store and charge our new Chromebooks and licenses to allow the school to administer them.
From the first three parts:
My students LOVE to use technology. Unfortunately, we just don't have enough computers to go around. Our current Chromebook cart is shared between several classrooms and the Chromebooks are old and wearing out. We have lost three Chromebooks this past month due to battery and charging issues taking us dangerously close to having less than a class set.
We need to replace our failing Chromebooks with new ones.
For that, we need your help. Please help us continue to have the tools we need for 21st Century learning with a new set of Chromebooks.
We use our current Chromebooks to create art, picture books, informational science books, presentations, write essays and personal narratives, and more. We use them to connect with the world outside our classroom through research and interacting with other classes and professionals in a variety of fields. Most importantly we use them to collaborate. My students work together to develop and build their creations. Every other week my sixth grade class is joined by our third grade "Tech Buddies" and my students get to mentor the "littles" while working collaboratively on projects with them. Please help us replace our computers so that they can continue to be digital creators and learn the skills needed to be successful in the modern world.
My students look forward to making even more awesome creations with the new Chromebooks.
