My school is located in very high poverty and incredibly multicultural community. There is a minimum of seven different languages spoken in my pre-k through 8th-grade buildings. My students also face poverty, with over 75% of them receiving free or reduced-priced lunches. Our students are incredibly creative and love their time in art!
"You can't use up creativity, the more you use the more you have."-Maya Angelou
My students want vibrant picture books that teach about the concepts and artists they are learning in art.
My Project
Drawing lines, mixing colors, and exploring art forms are all things we know happen within the art room. My students want books that explore those topics in our library that they can red to enhance their experiences in art class.
The books my students need, which include artist biographies and picture books focused on different art concepts, will help them create connections.
Surrounding themselves with vibrant and beautifully illustrated stories that hold their attention will not only increase their interest in art, but in reading as well!
These books will be able to help me showcase illustrators in the library and create the opportunity for my students to see themselves as both artist and illustrator.
