My Students

Students are passionate, self-aware and driven. They come from all over San Diego and represent the diversity of the city. As seniors, students are eagerly applying to college and planning for their future careers, all while working part time jobs, volunteering or participating in sports.

Project based learning is a cornerstone of our philosophy and students participate in many different projects throughout their time here.

The projects are authentic with real world experience applications.

As a 12th grade Art Teacher, I provide a variety of art materials to explore and integrate learning in all subjects. Students in my class are creating incredibly beautiful and meaningful art work.

My Project

Students are exploring Physics and Engineering concepts and using a variety of creative arts to represent the ideas and theorems. This project brings Physics, Engineering and Art together in a unique and interesting way.

Students will explore handmade paper making.

Utilizing a regular blender, students will break down paper into a liquid mush form, then rearrange it, add organic materials such as dried flowers and bits of tissue paper. Laying to dry on a screen rack, the paper dries and forms into a new handmade piece of paper. Students will also explore watercolor painting, carving and engraving wood with the Dremel and carving kit and sealing sculptural book art forms with epoxy resin.

All of this will give students an overview of paper, wood and book arts. All the while reinforcing physics and engineering concepts through the themes and construction of each project. Students will then use these techniques to build interactive modules that will represent and help other students to understand complex physics and engineering concepts.

The project and concepts come to life as students develop their own understanding of the complex ideas and design unique artworks that represent them. After completing their creations, students will share the artistic techniques and the physics concepts with elementary school students during an end of the year community service project and exhibition.
