I teach a group of high energy gifted learners that have a wide range of interests and abilities. They enjoy and are challenged by a variety of hands-on activities where they work in groups or individually to showcase what they have learned.
My students enjoy activities that push their thinking and allow them opportunities to apply their creative thinking and problem-solving skills.
We engage in project-based learning year long where my students are able to create a variety of products that they can share with their classmates and the school community at large. Finally, our technology-driven approach allows students to create and share their creations.
Creativity and technology are essential in our gifted program because they promote higher order thinking skills that push our students' thinking. As part of our program, we have "Creation Stations," where students have an opportunity to select independent study projects that incorporate technology and personal interests. These projects are usually completed during the second semester, where students select an area of interest that they want to further explore. Also, students have the option of completing their Creation Station individually, in partners, or in a small group. Some examples of Creation Station projects include making a movie that tours our school to include on our school's website, completing challenges with our newly acquired robots to prepare for an online competition, to writing and producing our own podcasts (on a kid-friendly topic of choice) to submit to this year's NPR Student Podcast Challenge.
Providing these types of projects allows students to hone in on to their personal interests while creating a product that showcases their individual strengths.
The materials in this project will allow us to update our technology equipment so that all students are able to dive into projects that matter to them. During the learning process, students will also acquire new technological skills that they will need to apply in creative ways.
