This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
I teach kindergarten in a high-poverty, urban public school setting in Eastern Missouri. Most of my students come from low socioeconomic families and neighborhoods.
What child' does not love to grab a paint brush and express themselves through the form of Art? My students need opportunities to go beyond the prescribed curriculum. They need time to create and learn through hands-on experiences. What better way to do this than to paint. As an educator of early childhood, I to often see our five and six year old children being asked to sit for long periods of time and keep time on task as that of a 8, 9, or 10 year old. I want my students to have experiences they will remember and the opportunity to learn letters, sounds and words through other types of media.
The only resources we have now are a few old hand me down paint brushes and paint that needs a film removed off the top before we can use it. I can just imagine a creation station being add to the workshop stations we already have. In it is a two-sided easel, paint cups, new paint brushes, fresh paint, a drying rack to keep our masterpieces safe and aprons to keep our clothes clean.
My students need this Creation Station. It will give them a new found enthusiasm for learning and the ability to express themselves beyond pencil and paper. Thank you for your continued support of all children and educators and I look forward to sending you a one-of-a-kind kindergarten work of art.
