My students need children's literature book titles which will be used to mentor them in techniques that writers use when they write a story.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Have you ever had to write a story and you had no idea how to begin? Maybe you didn't know what to put in your story. Imagine being a brand new writer. Can you imagine how difficult this task would be? Wouldn't it be great to have an expert mentor teach you these techniques?
The second graders I teach are just beginning to read and write.
Many of my students come from homes where no one speaks English and the parents are often illiterate in English and in their own language. Our test scores have been low but are slowly improving. Our teachers have worked hard to improve instruction in all areas. We have adopted a program called Balanced Literacy in an effort to help our students become literate.
My Project
Children love to have stories read to them! Why not take advantage of this and use these stories to mentor students in writing. The books I have selected will teach the students ways to start their stories. Everyday I will begin my Writer's Workshop with a minilesson that will teach students a different skill in writing. We will look at how the authors used things like dialogue, action, time of day, and the introduction of characters.
When an author writes a story they often take a "small moment" to write about. Students will see how they use setting, characters and that something happens to the character.
Can you imagine that?
A classroom full of writing mentors! Mentors-packed between the covers of a book! That's what funding this project will provide! With these books my students will learn how to become writers.
