My Students
I work in a Title I school in Rural East Texas teaching Art to grades 7 & 8. I want to provide my students with an art education that will help them grow and succeed. Teaching Art helps students build self-esteem and open up their world. They become risk takers, use critical thinking and their imaginations. Skills learned through Art will help them in all subject areas. My students deserve the chance to expand their capabilities through their knowledge of Art.
My Project
With the Sedona Red Clay and Amaco Glazes, my students will explore the art of hand-built pottery. We will make Cell Phone Sound amplifiers! Like a megaphone for a cell phone!
Students are so amazed when they learn how much Science is used in Ceramics.
We learn how the molecules of clay fuse together which makes the clay shrink. This we can calculate (Math) to determine what size to make our project so it will be big enough when it is fired. We also talk about the evidence of a chemical change with the addition of glazes. With our Cell Phone Amplifiers, we will even go over how sound waves travel.
It is so amazing how many ways art integrates with Math and Science. Ceramics is so fun the kids don't notice we are doing math and science until I point it out! Wow!
