This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Help! Have you ever drank from a mug and wonder how it was made? How about a vase that was so beautiful that you wanted to make it? My students need a pottery wheel and bats to create and hold out projects. Can you help?

I am the Art specialist in a K-5 Arts school.

We are located in one of the poorest rural areas of the state. Our families are plagued by poverty and high unemployment rates. I see about 975 students every week, from Kindergarten though grade five. All of the students receive free or reduced lunch. The student population is 95% Hispanic, 3% African American, 1% Caucasian, and 1% Asian. About 70% of the students in my room are learning English as a second language.

My Project

Pottery wheels have been used for thousands of years to create clay pots. With your help my students can enjoy making their own clay pots. My students learn, grow and change through clay experiences, however, it is not possible without a pottery wheel. We need a wheel to explore with clay and be able to have something at our fingertips seems so far away. It’s so great and fun making things on a pottery wheel, most kids derive just as much pleasure out of being able to decorate their masterpiece once it’s had enough chance to dry out and it being fired. Can you help us?

My students are wonderful; they have an opportunity in Art class to create something original that will stay with them throughout their lives.

They share what they create with family and friends with great pride. I am very happy that they find such pleasure in their school work. Many of my students tell me that this class is their reason to get out of their bed each day, others say, that this class brings them all the way to school.
