5th grade 2020 has been an adventure for teachers and students. My students are encouraged to discover daily with limited resources. I teach a bright class of students with special needs who are challenged daily with ADHD and ASD. Despite many challenges and limited technology my students face, my goal is to inspire and engage them as I expose students through civic education to make responsible financial decisions which promotes civic responsibility at an early age.
My students are diverse learners in 5th grade in an ethnically and economically diverse elementary school in Florida.
They come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with over 75% of our schools' students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. Students learn by doing and a technology-rich classroom caters to many different types of learners and learning disabilities by connecting students to a vast amount of knowledge and interactive activities. They are our future scientists, entrepreneurs, teachers... and I am hopeful to inspire my diverse learners to continue on a path of academic excellence.
Our new reality is virtual, and we’ve discovered a few challenges getting everything set up and working with old technology. Zoom meetings have been scheduled and we have emptied our laptop carts to provide students access to Internet or computers. But teachers need reliable computers too in order to connect through Zoom and distance learning. Working with an outdated computer with unreliable webcam impedes progress in reaching all my students. It’s all supposed to work effortlessly, the first time and every time. But that’s not always the situation with technology. I am leading virtual meetings throughout the day, along with helping to develop remote learning curriculum for students. It can be challenging when webcam, audio, or tools don’t work as expected.
The Lenova All-In-One computer will allow me to continue online learning while working from home.
It will also become our future classroom computer station when school re-opens and we return to the classroom. Starting the new school year with a new computer station now that our school laptop carts have been emptied will ensure success as I continue stimulating students and engage their curious minds.
