Creating Vibrant Authors

My students need 10 thesauri to work in cooperative groups to improve the message they are trying to communicate to readers by using stronger words in their writing.

My Students

My students have a voracious appetite for utilizing advanced vocabulary in all that they write. Due to their age, they don't have the breadth of vocabulary that they need to improve their meaning as writers. They have the knowledge to use a thesaurus to improve their writing and the will to do so.

My class is comprised of 19 third graders (11 boys and 8 girls).

All are eager and enthusiastic learners. They have a strong passion to write and communicate their ideas, even at such a young age. My school is a Title I school. It is comprised of varying ethnicities and economic backgrounds.

My Project

By obtaining 10 thesauri, children will be able to improve the messages they create in their writing and communicate in clearer and more interesting ways. In addition, by using a thesaurus, children quickly build their vocabulary which in turn helps them when they are reading as well as communicating orally. Ten thesauri enable me as a teacher to put children in small groups or partnerships on a regular basis in order to help children revise their work more effectively. In addition, by having numerous thesauri on hand, children learn that we work on using stronger words in all that we write not just during Writing Workshop.

Donations to this project will help build stronger writers, readers and speakers.

These are all skills that are lifelong and necessary to be successful in this current competitive market. I desire students to have the proper tools so that they can learn at an early age that they need to become excellent communicators both in writing and speaking.
