Creating Thinkers Of Tomorrow
My students need 18 subscription each to Scholastic News and Time For Kid Magazines to provide interesting nonfiction materials that are on their reading level to utilize during read to self time.
Do you remember looking at the pictures in your parent's magazines and thinking I wish I could read about this? My students are very interested in what is going on in the world but don't have resources that they can read on their own to learn about the world around them.
My students come from low income families and are not exposed to the many wonderful things happening in our world.
They are starved for answers and the ability to be independent learners. I want to teach the children to read nonfiction and think about how they feel about the world around them.
I want to teach my kids to be independent thinkers as well as readers. I have chosen two grade level magazines for my students to read and discuss with each other. I have chosen Scholastic magazine and Time for kids. With these materials I will be able to expose my students to factual information about the world around them and encourage them to have an opinion and hopefully a desire to become involved and make a difference in our world. While attending a faculty meeting the teachers were asked how many of us watched the news daily. I was shocked when only a quarter of the room stood up. I want to encourage the kids to pay attention to the world around them and realize their ability to become involved in meaningful matters through education. I want to empower my students to become involved in the decisions of the world no matter what their economic circumstances are.
These students live in a rural area and are often not exposed to the many wonderful places in our world.
With these materials I will be able to show them people and places they have never seen and create a desire to learn more.
