Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is in a small town community. It is a very tight knit community and has a unique school district set up. Most towns have students of one age group going to many different schools based on where they live. In our town, however, every student in the same grade will go to the same school. There is no separation based on where you live or socio-economic level. I love this set up because I believe it gives everyone in our town an equal opportunity at education and students are brought up with more diverse groups than just those that live in their nearby neighborhoods.
My school's students are all diverse and all have individual learning styles.
My class includes GATE students (gifted and talented, English language learners, RSP students, and a number of personalities! My students are special because of their differences, and I believe my teaching style should reflect this. Therefore, I have decided to begin this project!
My Project
Every year I strive to build a love of reading in my students. Unfortunately so many students are hesitant to read and don't have the classroom environment to encourage this. A classroom should be welcoming and comfortable and make students open to learning.
High interest books are so necessary as children will never have a love for reading if they aren't exposed to books they actually enjoy reading.
I have included books in a series that we have read together and students are so motivated to read and find out what happens next! I have also included a number of books perfect as mentor texts, not only that children will love, but that teaches content!
I have also include flexible seating options in this project as students are so much more excited to read when they can do it in a comfortable, low stress area.
