My Students

I teach at a small town suburban alternative high school in Oklahoma. Each student find ways to overcome obstacles put in their way, mostly by situations outside of their control. To come here, they have to have made the decision a diploma and graduation is important to them.

Alternative students get a bad rep but in reality, they're just kids trying to find their way with the cards they're dealt.

We can't do much about anyone's past but we can do a lot to be better than yesterday. These kids do that and more. They really impress me everyday with their creativity, perseverance, and good attitudes. We have become a family! We challenge them to be the best they can possibly be and achieve their goals in life. We are their cheerleaders and often their only support system. My students are the future and I am a lucky teacher to be able to spend my life working with them everyday. I have learned from them what is truly important in life.

Thank you in advance for considering donating to my amazing students. You are giving from your heart and we are truly appreciative!

My Project

Students thrive when they see first-hand that academic principles actually work in the real world. Hands-on learning helps students become more adept at grasping complex concepts and applying their knowledge to non-academic situations. The skills gap will grow to two million by 2025, meaning that young people who understand basic manufacturing principles and can put them to practice will be at an advantage over their college educated peers. This is a big incentive for students at an alternative school who might be less likely to consider college as an option. Learning these skills will open up the confidence and the possibility of going to a tech school, or even college, when they otherwise might not have.

Social and emotional standards of “self” are continuously met through the confidence and pride achieved by completing hand built projects and through learning new skills.

If you help us get Cricut Maker and accessories , we will help students design, experiment, create, and finalize their own ideas from beginning to end. Then analyze, fail, and improve, as they build confidence in their own abilities and take pride in their accomplishments. This confidence in turn will serve them later in high school, college or beyond. Many advanced careers, such as engineering, require people to design and fabricate. This project integrates many subject matters such as science, technology, engineering, art and math and gives them a real world application.

In addition to the academic skills they'll learn by this project, this will also help them learn invaluable entrepreneur, manager, and resource management skills as they learn about financially evaluating their value of their time to design and create, costs of materials, maintenance, and any troubleshooting loss. These are skills that would be helpful in almost any field the student decides to pursue.
