My classroom is a hard working group of fifth grade students who are self-motivated. We are a multiple ethnic and multiple-lingual class. We often use team based learning to promote cooperation and exchange of knowledge. The lack of computers has hindered the students' ability to create projects.
We are an inner city urban public elementary school located in Boston's Chinatown.
We serve students who are first language non-English speakers from Asian and Hispanic backgrounds. Approximately 80% of our students are low income and do not have regular access to technology. Given this, my goal is to have my students technologically competitive when they enter middle school.
My Project
My fifth grade students have little experience accessing the Internet for research and using the vast apps available to create projects. It is my intention to introduce them to Google drive in order to create technology literate children. They will learn the how to use Internet research responsibility and create PowerPoint presentations and word documents with ease. First, students will learn to how to conduct productive, efficient, and effective web searches, (i.e. Use key words or phrases associated with a given topic). Second, students will create PowerPoint presentations as final projects in literature, science, social studies, or math. They will also learn to type and format their essays on word documents.
These 2 laptops will allow students to become computer literate.
They will be able to create projects, such as PowerPoint presentations. The luxury of Internet access and current technology are not priorities for many of my students and their families because their social economic station makes this an unattainable goal. As a teacher, I want to increase my students' access to technology by making laptops readily available for teaching and learning.
