This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
I work with students who are in a post-secondary special education program and this program aims to model what a college experience would look like for students who are 18-22 years of age with special needs.
We focus on five areas of growth: daily living skills, accessing the community (this looks like being able to navigate public transportation systems, where to buy groceries, etc.), employability skills, lifelong learning skills, and personal skills.
We are aiming to really make a difference in the way society views individuals with special needs. These students are striving every day to be active members of their communities.
They want jobs, they want to push themselves by seeking a college education and in order to close the gap between what our students want to achieve and what they can achieve we need to give them more access. More access to supplies, to resources, and to people and teachers that care deeply and are invested in their success!
My Project
I am currently rolling into my second year of teaching at Opportunities Academy and having access to school supplies is key for my student's success!
Help me out by donating to my Donor's Choose project to make sure that my classroom is fully stocked with things like binders, pens, pencils, a carpet for my cozy corner, etc.
This will get them ready to go for my students when they come back to start the new year in August. It is so important that my students have a strong start at the beginning of the school year because the work we do is urgent. Our biggest goal at Opportunities Academy is setting our students up to be independent post-graduation from our program. The best way we can have a strong start and work towards our urgent goals is to make sure that we have the supplies to make that happen on day one. That means that they are set up with binders to keep their work organized, they have pens, pencils, and highlighters to complete critical work in their educational development. Supplies like laminators and other office products go into supporting our student-run internships and externships. These materials might seem low-leverage, but ensuring that students are 100% prepared is the biggest gift we can give them on day one of the new year!
