My students are filled with the genius that they need to live successful lives! I'm just here to help them find it. A large majority of our student population are students of color that live in low-socioeconomic status households. While they face many struggles they are my constant lesson of perseverance and optimism.
The messages black and brown children receive from our medias and national current events can cause low self-esteem.
Our school believes it is just as important to create a sense of self love as it is to create systems that close the education gap. We strive on combating the racial injustices and closing the education gap by implementing both within our work.
I do not want to focus on the struggles my student population can face but rather the powerful change they can create in our world should they be given the appropriate support and opportunities.
My Project
By having books with characters that our students can relate to we make it easier for them to find a love for reading that is so crucial for their academic success. The Little Leaders: Bold Women in Black History is not only a book that teaches about black history, it empowers young black and brown girls as well as teaching all students about black history.
Your generous donation to our project will not only allow our students to access biographies of important historical figures but also allow them to see themselves as leaders and possible agents of change.
Each student having their own copy is very important because it allows our lower readers to learn reading skill while following along with other readers. Once we are done reading the entire book each student will be allowed to take their copy home. In my opinion it is very important for black and brown children to have books that they can relate to in their homes and classrooms. This would be one of the best gifts our students can receive!
