Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine being eight years old and having very limited access to books and learning materials? Many of my students do not have books or computers in their homes. This severely limits their ability to progress in vocabulary, reading comprhension and many other academic areas.
My students are third and fourth grade special education students in a large metropolitan school district in Indiana.
My school is excellent! We have excellent ratings from the state and are getting a lot of good "buzz" and recognition on a city and statewide level. The entire staff has high expectations for all students and the level of rigor is extremely high. Many of my students are English Language Learners. English is their second language and is not the primary language spoken in their homes. They struggle with many areas of reading, including vocabulary and comprehension. They also often struggle with learning addition/subtraction and multiplication/division facts and many areas of math.
My Project
I am asking for this iPad and cover for a variety of reasons. First, many of my students experience difficulty finding resources which will allow them to read material at their independent reading level. The iPad will allow them to access some websites where they can read books at their level. Also, it will allow them to practice sight words which they have not mastered and increase their oral reading fluency. They can also use the iPad to gain mastery of math facts and engage in interactive math tutorials. My students become very excited when presented with electronic learning tools, and an iPad will increase their level of motivation and excitement about what they're learning!

Studies have shown that independent reading with "right fit" books enables students to increase their level of vocabulary and comprehension. My students do not have enough computers for me to allow them all to use on a daily basis electronic resources which will provide them high interest reading material at their reading level. An iPad means that one less student will have to wait their turn!
