This fall I will have a class of at least 25 kindergarten students who are active and eager to learn and experience school for the very first time. In order to keep up with them, I will need to have new and exciting ways to keep them engaged. I would like my students to have access to a variety of phonics activities that will help them jump into reading from the beginning.
"If a child can’t learn the way we teach, maybe we should teach the way they learn." -Ignacio Estrada.
My school is considered a high needs school and has 100% of its students receiving free breakfast and lunch each day. A lot of these kids will not have had exposure to reading at home prior to the start of school. My students will be entering school at all different levels and abilities. Being able to provide them with an assortment of phonics activities to support them as they are learning to read will be so beneficial to their learning.
My Project
Every day my students have an hour-long literacy block in the morning. During this time, students are rotating through small groups that are teacher-led and through independent literacy stations. Each literacy station needs to be engaging enough to hold the students' attention for about 10 to 15 minutes, and it needs to be something that they can access independently. Through the donation of magnetic letters for hands-on phonics activities, my students will be able to manipulate letters and build words, which are foundational skills to help them learn to read. My students will be able to use these letters multiple times throughout the day through reading stations as well as in step-by-step lessons. Helping my students to become highly engaged readers is my ultimate goal. The magnetic white boards will be a way for students to use the letters and show their learning as well as with the dry erase markers.
Through your donation to our project, you will be supporting my students with their phonics work.
Phonics is a key part of reading instruction. Students need to understand that letters each have their own name and sound. Once they understand that key concept, then students can begin to blend the letters in order to form words. Phonics is the beginning step to creating successful readers.
