My students need supplies to create anchor charts that support literacy instruction by making our thinking visible and available for students to refer to as they practice new skills and strategies.
I teach 6th grade English Language Arts at an inner city school in Central Massachusetts. It is a wonderful, exciting place to work with hard working students who deserve the best education I can give them.
Our student population says a lot about some of the challenges my students face on a daily basis.
Of our 600 students in grades PreK-6, 88 percent are high needs students, 48 percent are English Language Learners, 62% are economically disadvantaged and 35% are Special Education students. Our school has one of our District's SAIL programs for students diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We are a diverse group that accept and encourage our differences and take pride in our inclusiveness.
My Project
Anchor Charts are co-created with students as the teacher introduces and or models a new skill or strategy using chart paper to record important information. When students are involved in the process of creating these learning tools, they are more likely to comprehend more deeply and remember more of what they learn. Having anchor charts posted in the classroom helps the students make connections with the initial lesson as they refer to them while working independently on practicing and applying new information.
In order to create colorful, accessible charts for our classroom, I need Post-it Super Sticky Easel Pads, Chart Paper Anchor Pads, Multi-Colored Flip Chart Markers and storage bins to keep our materials intact when not in use but available to revisit when needed.
These materials will make our Literacy Block one where students are actively engaged in the learning process as they learn how to capture the main idea and details of new information. This is a skill they can use forever to help them better understand, process and retain new information.
