Many people learn best by doing! My students have completed a learning styles inventory and the majority of them are tactile learners who learn best by using their hands and being actively engaged. Traditional teaching styles do not produce the cognitive results needed for their learning.
My students live in a very rural area.
Most of them do not like to read! They like to do hands-on activities but our science classroom is limited in supplies. We are working to build up our science resources. Hands-on activities not only teach science concepts, and hopefully spark students' interests in science, but they help with thinking, listening, and writing skills.
My Project
Science isn't just about learning concepts but about applying them also. When students are limited to learning mainly from a textbook, they may learn the concepts but they don't get to apply the concepts, especially to everyday life. I want to encourage my students to look outside the box and see all the possibilities. This kit will allow students to bring together their knowledge about water quality and pollution while providing an activity that engages them. They will learn how to test water for pollution and can then look at ways to reduce water pollution and test again. Our school community is divided by a major river that runs through our county. It is the source of drinking water for counties above and below us. Water quality and pollution is not only important as a student of science, but as a citizen.
I have so many ideas and ways that I want to expand my science program, but I don't have the financial resources needed to accomplish everything.
I applied for my first classroom grant last year and received it. I purchased a weather station for my students. I am already researching my grant idea for this year. I not only teach about sustainability in natural resources, but I look for sustainability in my classroom resources.
