Creating Open Minds Through Safe Environments

I need funding to attend a 200 hour yoga certification and SEL facilitator program called Breathe for Change, to bring emotional wellbeing to students.

My Project

Each and every person deals with trauma at some point in their life. Unfortunately, when children experience trauma or daily stresses of life, they come to school already in a "stressed mode" and their brain is not open or ready to learn. More and more evidence points to the importance of social and emotional learning, and Breathe for Change offers the tools needed for a teacher to bring those skills into the classroom.

I want every child who steps into my classroom to feel it's a safe environment so their minds are open to learning.

When students are in a "fight or flight' state, whether that be from a fight with a sibling, lack of sleep, food insecurities, or worry about a parent, they are not in a position to learn. Through the Breathe For Change methodology, I will create an environment where students can relax, breathe, and feel safe to make mistakes and grow their minds.

I serve a diverse student population, which includes special education, emergent bilinguals, and minorities. I want to bring equity into the classroom by providing an opportunity for each child to learn and grow, regardless of their background, race, socioeconomic status, or home life. Breathe For Change will give me, as a teacher, the tools to allow each child to learn. It will help me teach them coping mechanisms for stress and emotions which will allow students to begin to regulate their own emotions, both at school and at home. I love each and every soul who walks into my classroom and I want them to leave each day with a feeling of success, joy, and the ability to see their dreams.
