I teach English at an urban fine arts high school. My students are extremely creative and thrive on instruction that touches them artistically. It's a wonder to walk down the steps and hear music emanating from one floor and the sounds of dancing from another.
As young, enthusiastic artists, my students are inspired by music, art, and drama which I incorporate in my English lessons regularly.
Our class discussions are lively and insightful, especially when students bring their artistic backgrounds into the discussion.
My Project
I will be teaching a creative writing class for seniors this fall in which I will use model texts to help students work on crafting their own style of writing.
One important aspect for emerging writers is to create their own voice in their work.
I would like to use THE SWEET HEREAFTER, by Russell Banks, as one of my model texts. The novel tells the story of a small town after it has gone through a devastating school-bus accident. Banks uses multiple narrative voices in order to relay what has become of the town after the tragedy. Each voice is distinct and compelling.
I am sure that by having access to THE SWEET HEREAFTER, my students will gain a better understanding of how to create voice in their own writing. Please help my students become more adept writers by supporting this project.
