Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I am writing this proposal for my high school vocal students that participate in our Intermediate and Advanced Choirs. Our high school serves a large urban area and has a high percentage of students that are low-income.
Many of our students are highly interested and motivated in their study of vocal music.
They look forward to their choir concerts and performances. They are very creative and are always interested in pursuing and being involved in special music projects. Many of them are involved in garage bands and singing groups outside of the school setting. These creative outlets give my students an opportunity to practice some of the learning that is going on in the classroom. When this is combined with their own music interests it allows them to see how practical their learning is in their everyday lives.
My Project
Our classroom project is centered around the PwC's Financial Literacy Innovation Challenge. The materials that we need are a laptop computer and Band In A Box. Band In A Box is a powerful music program that allow composers to create high quality accompaniment tracks. It contains hundreds of varieties of music combinations that students can use to create music - jazz, country, rock, bluegrass. Basically, with a laptop and Band in A Box, my students will create music that most people will find unbelievable.
Project Explained: The project will introduce our music students to the Earn Your Future Curriculum. We will concentrate on the K-5 components. Students will be assigned the task of writing and composing a song (1-2 min) that can be paired with one of the interactive activities. The project offers great opportunities for cross curricular planning and collaboration. A road trip to an elementary school to share our final compositions would be a great way to end our project!
I have seen first hand how music can influence the learning of students at any age.
