Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is located in South Central Los Angeles where I teach English 11 and Journalism. My students are energetic, social, and full of life. These scholars juggle a complicated balance of school, work, family, and life, but they bring their heart into the classroom every day.
In order to become the lifelong learners they are capable of being, I want to provide resources that encourage their curiosity and challenge their understanding of the world around them.
My students have individual passions—from turtles to football to cartoon illustration—that I want to provide opportunities to nurture and grow.
My Project
Books provide students with the unique experience to enter other worlds; they allow students to escape their own difficulties for a while or find inspiration in courageous characters.
My school does not have the ability or space to offer a school-wide library, so I want to bring the joy of reading and books to my students through a classroom library.
Books are the most accessible way to engage with new perspectives and new parts of the world. Additionally, the ability to read critically is one of the biggest indicators of academic success. Providing students with literature that is relevant and exciting to them is imperative. With the small number of new books I have been able to add so far, the excitement in my students surprised even me. Donating to this project allows me to further develop this excitement in reading and support my students in becoming lifelong learners.
