Have you ever faced the obstacle of not being able to read the same book as your classmates because it was too challenging for you? Many of my ELL students find our common textbook stories to be difficult to understand because the words are too difficult for them to read independently.
My students are predominantly English Language Learners in an inner city district.
These children want to learn but find the language barrier they have prevent them from really grasping and making sense of the stories in our big anthology. These are children who want to learn, want to participate and struggle to find a balance. Our school is a language center which means that more than 75% of our population speak English as a second language.
My Project
The resources in this project will provide every child in my classroom with the opportunity to "read" and understand the stories in our reading textbook. By listening to the story on the CD/tape, the children will be able to focus on the content and meaning of the story rather than spending their time trying to decode all of the words. Every child in my classroom will have the opportunity to rotate to this listening station to hear the story read by a fluent reader which maximizes benefit for all students, even the top readers in the classroom. The rotation will allow children to practice reading the story on their own but also ensure that they get the benefit of hearing the full story by listening on the tape. I am certain this will bridge the learning gap for children who continue to struggle to decode and make full meaning of the text on their own.

By being able to read along with the story on audio, the students will not only be able to finish the story independently but will also hear examples of good oral reading while learning new words that they may have struggled with when reading alone.
