My Students

I teach at a small 4th and 5th grade school; about half of our school is low income. Our students come from a variety of different economic backgrounds with 50% of our students receiving free lunch. We live in a military community in a small town where funds are limited.

My students are hardworking, determined overachievers who never fail to meet a challenge.

They have very big plans for their futures. When asked what they would like to do when they grow up, I hear responses such as become a cardiologist, marine biologist, Navy pilot, pediatric doctor, and ultrasound tech.

It is my goal to meet each student at his or her academic level and help them all reach their full potential.

My Project

These lab materials (a scale, beakers, thermometers, and burners) will enhance student learning as we cover various 5th grade standards. Children need their senses engaged. Hands-on science activities lets this happen, giving kids a chance to engage multiple senses.

Hands-on science encourages the children to DO something – observe, ask questions, touch, smell, experiment.

Kids learn by doing, and these materials will help students measure, gather, and record their findings.

Allowing children to really get into science gives them the chance to make discoveries on their own. They’ll be more likely to remember a learning experience if it’s just that---a real experience.

Critical thinking skills are enhanced during such science activities. Kids can ask the why, how, and what questions. Even better, they can help answer the questions themselves. They can learn the scientific process along the way!
