Help me give my students mindfulness supplies, books about mindfulness, a Hoberman Sphere, a chime and journals, so they can learn to regulate their emotions in a healthy way.
My students are between 3-5 years old and have a variety of special needs that range in significant developmental delays, autism, Prader-Willis syndrome, and Down Syndrome.
My students are approximately 6 months-2 years behind the typically developing child.
All of my students struggle with a minimum of two of the following areas, communication/language skills, fine/gross motor skills, academics and behavioral/social skills.
All of my students receive occupational therapy, physical therapy, and/or speech and language therapy on a weekly basis.
Our school is a Title I school and the majority of my students come from low-income households and all qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.
My Project
These materials will encourage and teach the youngest learners in our building to learn how to pay attention on purpose to what is happening right now. With these materials I will be able to provide my students with resources that will allow them to be productive participants in our building. We will use the Hoberman sphere to teach deep controlled breathing. They will reflect in their gratitude journals and I will be able to use these to document their progress during our year of mindfulness. My students will use the requested mindfulness literature such as “When Sophie Get’s Angry,” to better understand emotions such as anger, sadness, focus and happiness. We will have calming activities such as mindfulness coloring book pages and mindfulness card activities. With changes in the demands of academics and testing for even our youngest learners, there are fewer opportunities for these children to learn appropriate social/emotional coping strategies. I am hoping that once I teach them the basics and beyond, they will be well adjusted in the future grades.
