Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

I have the honor of teaching the most intelligent, enthusiastic, and knowledge-thirsty students in the world! I teach in a STEAM school, so my students are taught to be problem solvers. They enter my classroom each day excited and ready to learn new concepts.

My classroom is a melting pot of cultures, socioeconomic backgrounds, and ability levels; but all of those differences are left at the door.

When my students enter my classroom, we are a family, and we find ways to overcome the differences and help each other succeed. They are a very active and energetic bunch that love to participate in activities that allow them to move!

My Project

We read many different types of literature each day in my classroom. My students have learned how to determine if something they have read is a fact or an opinion. I feel that it is important for my students to be exposed to various types of literary texts so that they can begin to form their own opinions on the topics they read and/or hear about to decipher what is real and what is not.

The one area my students have not been exposed to is magazines on their level.

Our class does not have kid friendly magazines that are appropriate to help my students become media literate.

Each of my students will be able to get a copy of the Scholastic News Magazine which covers current science and social studies topics on their level. We will be able to use these magazines in whole and small group discussions and the students will be able to take these home to share what they have learned with their family. This will not only allow my students to be exposed to media literacy, but just might help their family to become more literate with a factual form of the media as well.

The magazine subscriptions will also help my students to be exposed to current events, but in such a way that they are able to digest, comprehend, and become better problem solvers.

The flashlights will add a fun element to the reading. It is always fun to read with flashlights. These flashlights will be able to be used as incentives for reaching various reading goals.

Thank you for helping me bring media literacy to my classroom!
