Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work in a classroom serving students identified with autism in sixth, seventh, and eighth grade in a self-contained setting. My students have a wide variety of needs. I have students who are non-verbal and working on sitting and identifying numbers, students who are working to master basic addition and subtraction, and students who are performing near grade level.
My students struggle to complete work independently and cannot be given "regular" independent work.
My students learn independent work skills by completing file folder activities. These activities requires the students to match pieces inside of a file folder, these work tasks require a lot of velcro, the cost of this quickly adds up.
My Project
My students struggle to complete any work independently. We use a variety of resources to teach our students to be able to sit and attend to a task without constant assistance but due to the wide variety in ability levels, this requires a lot of different work that is readily available. It can quickly become costly to ensure that all of our students have work they are able to complete independently but also having a large enough variety that they do not simply memorize the work.
By creating file folders, the students are able to attend to independent tasks at their level and we are able to quickly pull this work.
These file folders last for many years and are easy to store but require a lot of Velcro when they are initially made. We need to make more file folders as the students have been completing the same ones all year, many students have the answers memorized, by having this new Velcro we can create more independent work that can be used for many years to come.
