My students need hands-on materials for learning math such as: different counters for sorting, puzzles and 3D shapes, activities to support their knowledge of numbers, and ten frames for practicing concepts in small groups.
The children in our district have a diverse background with many ESL learners as well. They are eager to learn because for many this is their first school experience. I am looking to keep things simple in the classroom, yet provide my students with creative and meaningful learning experiences in a variety of ways.
When my kids walk in the classroom I see them for their potential and how I can help them grow.
I may not be able to control their lives outside of the school; however, I can control their experience during the school day. By doing this in a positive way, I am hopeful to inspire even our earliest learners to continue on a path of academic success and love for learning.
My Project
I have been teaching my children that practice makes perfect (or better as one child reminds me) and that they can be rock stars by giving their best effort and practicing. Having these materials will allow me to differentiate my instruction and their learning to meet the needs of where they are both educationally and developmentally.
Many of the children in our district do not have access to math manipulatives, games, or learning materials outside of school.
Adding these resources to my classroom would be a huge benefit for the students because I will be able to teach the children math concepts in a variety of ways so I can reach all types of learners.
