This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
My students come from an urban area with little focus on the importance of education. My students face big challenges everyday, from drug addicted parents to abuse and neglect just to name a few. This is not to say that every student of mine struggles in this way, but I have students who go home on Friday and don't have anything to eat until Monday morning at breakfast. Many of my students have seen the hardships that poverty has to offer and sometimes the only safe place for them is in our classroom.
In our neighborhood we experience challenges such as violence and drugs, but as a whole, our community comes together when we need the support.
We are a HUB school, which offers us many resources from the community. This is a great asset that we have at our building as it brings parents and the community to our school and really opens eyes to the necessary support that education needs.
My Project
My students love to learn through interaction. Being able to manipulate and create is very crucial to maximize learning for my kiddos. My students love The Magic School Bus and are very familiar with the stories and lessons that go along with them. These Magic School Bus kits would allow them to extend their learning even farther.
Many of my students do not have reading material at home.
Included in this bundle is Time for Kids. These magazines would allow them to have reading material of their own to build a library for themselves at home. These magazines will also help to promote literacy, which is a huge focus in our classroom!
