This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
Literacy is important for all children. Children with special needs, however, need special materials to develop literacy skills. Children with disabilities need to use all their senses to explore literacy. Books, props, and picture symbols as words are all part of helping them improve literacy skills.
A lending library of resource materials to encourage literacy with special needs students in Guilford County is in the works but needs additional materials. The lending library is staffed by the assistive technology specialist based at the county's special school- Gateway Education Center. Classrooms will choose a book and props as their unit for a two week period. Additional adapted materials, such as switches and communication symbols, will also be available for the class in order to meet the individual needs of all the students.
These resources will enable students with special needs to develop literacy skills to improve their communication skills, social skills, as well as academic skills.
