My students need a variety of texts to meet all of their reading needs and interests! To nurture a love for reading, it is essential to have books that students truly enjoy, and want to read.
It’s difficult to put into words what I see and experience every day as the teacher of 21-second graders. 21 unique minds, 21 unique personalities, and 21 unique cultures and backgrounds. Countries of origin may be located in Africa and Central America, as well as many students coming from the United States. Our school is located in the heart of a low-income neighborhood. This is reflected in our classroom through the necessity of free and reduced-price lunches offered to 100% of students at our school. The need is also reflected in the “Snack Packs” sent home every Friday and the healthy snacks given to each student every single day.
My students are 7 to 8 years old, but many have experienced more tragedy, more trauma than I ever knew existed when I was their age.
Every time they walk through our classroom door, it is my goal, my duty, to ensure each and every one of my students feels safe and loved. If they do not feel that way at home, they need it more than ever at school.
My Project
The purpose of this project is to increase the variety of books we have in our personal classroom library. Our students are expected to read independently each day. Having the ability to choose which books they are able to read drastically increases their interest!
Imagine having to read for 20 to 40 minutes each day, but not having access to the books you enjoy.
Your passion for reading would not grow, or even worse, may never take off. My goal is for each of my second graders to go into third grade with a love for reading. This love has the ability to shape the rest of their lives!
Throughout the year, I have taken note of which books my second graders tend to gravitate toward-- Star Wars, Ninjago, Owl Diaries and Mercy Watson are among many of their favorites. If we had these books in the classroom, my students would not need to wait until library the next week to check out a new book of their favorite series!
