We have 70 students in our third grade. Our grade contains students with varying abilities, including students in Basic Skills, students with IEPs, English Language Learners, and students who perform above grade level expectations. They are diverse in family backgrounds, ethnicity, religion, SES, and many other factors.
Our goal this year is to instill in our students the lifelong habits of strong readers.
We want students to read not because their teacher or the parents told them to do it. We want them to find the excitement and adventure that each book holds.
My Project
This year we are changing our reading curriculum. We are starting off this year not by just instructing when the students should read and what they should do when they read. Instead, our focus is going to be on creating lifelong readers. We want students to find their passion in reading. We want our children to want to read- not because we tell them to, but because of how enjoyable it is.
Third grade becomes the turning point in our students' education- where before they were learning to read, but now they are reading to learn.
In order help tap into the various reading skills that help a student get lost in a great book, we need mentor texts that we can use help teach them and guide them. We want to show them how to be successful readers and foster their independence so they can carry those skills throughout life.
