Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My students this past year made my first year of teaching an absolute joy. They came in every day eager to learn and help each other. The district I teach in is very diverse, with many students speaking English as a second or third language. It truly is a joy to watch them help their peers who are still learning English. They help keep my passion for teaching alive every day.
I have loved every minute of getting to know them more as learners and individuals.
I want to be able to provide them with all the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and beyond, as many of them come from low-income homes where English is not the native language. They really benefit from tools and supplies that other districts may take for granted.
My Project
Instilling a love of reading in my students is a passion of mine. As a reader myself, I love recommending books to my students and talking about the books with them. Almost nothing brings me more joy than seeing my students engrossed in independent reading.
Research has shown that kids who have more access to books and more choice in choosing what they want to read improves their academics and attitudes toward reading.
The books that I have chosen are ones that have been released recently or are about relevant (and interesting!) topics in society. By having engaging books in our classroom library, I hope to lessen the achievement gap and create lifelong readers.
