My students need books that are on their reading levels but are also interesting to them.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I work at a small, urban school. The area has a high poverty rate and most of our students receive free or reduced lunch. Our students come to us in 6th grade from several different schools in the area. Each of them have a unique background and make our classroom a fun place to be.
Over half of the 26 students in our 6th grade class currently read at a 3rd grade reading level or below.
Our 6th grade class is taught by 2 teachers using a co-teaching model. During this time we try to teach not just the content but also to be lifelong learners.
My Project
The school I work in is a 6-12 school. Most of the reading materials available are on a 5th grade reading level or higher. Since most of my students struggle to read these materials, they give up easily and are starting to dislike reading.
In order to get students to be come lifelong readers, we need high-interest, low-level materials available for them to read!
Many of the books I am trying to get are chapter books that are written on a 3rd grade level but they are about topics that would interest my 6th graders. The students don't want to read picture books anymore and these books will provide a great in-between while we work to build their comprehension and reading levels in class.
